Listen to the complete fadeout of the album version of that song starting at out and tell me that it doesn't send chills up your spine when Barry says, not sings the words You are the first, the last, my everything" along with those gorgeous horns, strings and that Barry White thumping beat. Uh, time to come out of lurkerdom for a while to comment on "The ebony voice" as BW was called 'round here in the 70's. I consider each and every album recorded for 20th Century from to to be essential, that is, from Can't get enough 74 to The man Great stuff on each and every album from that period.
If you're a completist, you'll also want the first Greatest hits album discussed earlier in the thread as it contains the complete "Love sernade", unfaded, as well as some edits unavailable anywhere else. I like Barry's debut I've got so much to give but for some reason I don't really feel the second album Stone gon' , although it does have its moments. The second hits album with a painting of Barry smiling on the moon has full length versions, but no exclusive material, IIRC.
I've never heard any of the albums originally recorded for CBS in the late 70's-early 80's, but if the songs that appear on the box set are any indication, they're not really essential. I particularly enjoy The man is back! Put me in your mix from '90 deserves special note for containing a horrible version of "Volare" the italian song , but redeeming itself with "Dark and lovely", a great 10 minute uncredited duet with Isaac Hayes, no less. Great stuff. All time greatest hits from '95 or so, is a good starting point, but do note it only contains edited versions, which is good for certain songs but not so good for others.
Still, it's good to have what I think are the single mixes in one place. The only album to avoid has to be his latest, Staying power, from Chock full of forgettable contemporary "slow jams", it also contains two of the worst covers I've ever heard, one from Sly Stone Thank you falletin be mice elf The only interesting cuts have to be the two versions of "The longer we make love", one a duet with Chaka Khan, the other a duet with the underrated white soul chanteuse Lisa Stansfield.
Sound quality isn't bad at all and includes an exclusive remix of "Never never gonna give ya up" in a hip hop style, not too bad but not essential either. I'd buy each and every one if they were made available, but in the meantime, Rhapsody in White, White gold and a best of collection are still in print there'a a small dropout in one cut, "Forever in love", on the best of, though.

But still it cannot be denied; at the end of the party, no matter how good or bad, Love Unlimited Orchestra provided a sound that was integral to the decade and a service to purveyors of shag carpets and crackling fireplaces everywhere.
