The powerful urge to dance which it triggered quickly gave it a place in Cuban carnivals, the ultimate recognition for Latin music. In its local version it was more and more distinct from the great American and international adventures… And yet, even though it was recorded abroad by exiles and musicians of other nationalities, merengue remained a symbol of Dominican culture.
Trujillo also commissioned a merengue album from the lavish orchestra of Xavier Cugat, a great Cuban star who divided his prestigious bookings between New York and Los Angeles. The great singer Celia Cruz, a Cuban son artist open to various influences, loved singing merengue and like several Dominican artists, she released records for Seeco. Many other Hispanic musicians included merengue in their repertoire. In Puerto Rico, local stars Ismael Rivera, Rafael Cortijo and several others recorded in styles that were very close to merengue, the bomba and the plena traditional music derived from the contradanza , both of which were occasionally sold as merengue in Europe due to their similiarity.
Two of his pieces are included here. The excellent accordionist and composer Luis Kalaff immigrated to Puerto Rico and then New York, where he recorded several albums for Seeco, some of whose best titles can be heard here.
Their dance music masterpiece El Marinero has them singing the story of an ambitious seafarer sailing off to conquer America and the world. At the end of the Fifties, the best merengue musicians were capable of experimenting with original new rhythms. The syncopated bass and the general atmosphere was already suggestive of salsa even more than the plena of Puerto Rico. As for the bachata, a Dominican form of the bolero close to merengue proper, it, too, was rejected by high society for a long time, like merengue.
With roots more anchored in the language of the streets and anti-establishment irony, in the s bachata would become very popular in Dominica and beyond. Sometimes they make you think of the spinning Congo rumba guitars of Franco and the O. It was in Cuba in that Eduardo Davidson created the pachanga, a style close to merengue rhythm.
Born at the end of the Sixties, Salsa descends directly from the pachanga and therefore the rhythm of merengue. Note in passing that the musician Johnny Pacheco, who popularized pachanga and founded the famous record-company Fania, the emblematic salsa label was born and raised in the Dominican Republic. On the death of Rafael Trujillo, the jubilant population immediately rejected the pieces composed in his honour and they were banned in New pieces condemning the despot sprang up, sometimes written by the same artists.
